Speaking up for Women - 2024 Election Kit

2024 is election year in the UK. We have put together a pack of resources to help organisations engage with the various upcoming elections: General, Local, Mayoral and Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs).

DOWNLOAD

We do not yet know when the General Election will take place, but we do know that on 2nd May, local, mayoral and PCC elections will be held. These local decision-makers decide key local policies and funding priorities that impact women and girls. This election year provides a unique opportunity to ensure that women and girls are central on the agenda for the next 4 years.

We have created a 'Speaking up for Women: 2024 Election Kit' that includes resources to help grassroots women's organisations to fully engage with all the elections. It also includes resources that will help you to equip your service users to get their voices heard, make informed decisions come election day and hold those candidates to account.

Praise for the toolkit:

“"Kairos have used the Toolkit to engage with one of the MP's in Coventry in the lead up to the local elections. Representatives from the MP's office attended our Women's Hub and met with three women who wanted to discuss the challenges they face as women. The women were able to raise their concerns regarding women's homelessness and VAWG in a meaningful way using questions from the Toolkit. As a result, the MP has written to The Minister for Housing and Levelling up, The Police and Crime Commissioner and local Councillors. This has given the women who access our services a voice and allowed them to be heard. It has also demonstrated that even a small number of women can come together to lobby for change and call for action. One of the women reported that she found the experience empowering." ”

WRC have written to the leaders of the three main parties: Liberal Democrats, Conservatives and Labour, to ask them what they are doing to centre women's voices. Our letters to each leader are below, and we will post any responses we receive.

  • Best Practice Briefing: Post-Separation Abuse and the Law

Post-separation abuse refers to a pattern of abusive behaviour that either begins or continues after a relationship has ended. Where a relationship was abusive prior to the separation, the nature of the abuse may change and/or escalate when the relationship ends, as the abuser seeks to continue exerting control over the victim. Despite increasing recognition, there remain significant gaps in how post-separation abuse is understood within the criminal justice system.

  • Best Practice Briefing: Professional Resilience, Self and Collective-Care

The rise of the ‘manosphere’, the ongoing ‘pandemic’ of VAWG, and high-profile cases such as the ‘Epstein crimes’ all underscore a broader context: a persistent and blatant disregard of women’s rights and a lack of accountability and justice for perpetrators who continue to violate us. Together, these realities point to a deeper reckoning with political, social, moral, and ethical failures among those in positions of power.

  • Building Relationships with Funders and Commissioners

Developing strong relationships with funders and commissioners is crucial for securing funding and influencing policy. While it demands time and effort alongside your organisation's core activities, it's a vital component of long-term sustainability. This guide offers updated advice on networking, relationship development, and maintenance.
