News Blogs & News Labrys: Challenging Stereotypes and Empowering Women Through Security In Part 1 of this interview feature, we heard from Liane Timmermann and Di Win at Labrys Security and its commitment to providing women-centered protection. Now, in Part 2, the co-founders talk about breaking stereotypes in the security field, fostering inclusivity, and how Labrys is actively creating new pathways for women in security. Their dedication to women’s safety and equality is an inspiring reminder of how security can be reshaped to empower rather than intimidate. Q&A with Labrys Security: Part 2 | Challenges, Successes, and Aspirations Q: What are some common misconceptions about women’s security that Labrys Security aims to challenge? We often hear that security is “too dangerous” or that women “aren’t strong enough.” The biggest myth we want to debunk is that security isn’t for women. Security isn’t just about physical strength; it’s about communication, awareness, and de-escalation—skills women often possess in spades. We hope to inspire women to see this as a career path, whether as volunteer stewards or full-time professionals. Q: How does Labrys Security prioritise inclusivity and diversity? We aim for our team to reflect the diversity of women we protect. When women and girls see themselves represented in our team, they know they’re safe and understood. While we remain a woman-only team focused on women’s safety, our approach benefits all attendees, including men, by creating a calmer, safer event environment. Q: Can you share a story or testimonial that captures the impact of your work? One client shared her experience at a feminist conference: initially nervous upon arrival, she was relieved to see our all-female team. She said, “Seeing that I was surrounded by women who understood made me feel I was in the right place.” Moments like this validate our work and drive us to keep growing. Q: What challenges have you encountered, and what are your goals for the future? Initially, we faced scepticism, but the positive feedback from clients who value our services has helped. Our goal is to become a top choice for organisations prioritising women’s safety and to inspire more women to enter this field. We want to change the face of security and show that women have a place here. Q: How can others support Labrys Security’s mission? The simplest way to support us is by spreading the word! If you know someone who needs security, let them know about us. We’re always open to conversations about new partnerships and are excited to bring our unique approach to more events. You can find us on Facebook or visit our website to get in touch. Q: Anything you’d like to add about Labrys Security? Our journey is grounded in friendship and the strength of sisterhood. We’re building something we’re incredibly proud of, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to talk about our mission with Women’s Resource Centre. Testimonial “I signed up to a feminist conference on a whim and didn’t realise how nervous I was until I got there. Standing in the queue on a cold, wet morning, I could see the security team was checking everyone in and I was immediately frightened. I looked again. Was that a woman in a security jacket? I breathed a sigh of relief and decided to head for whichever queue she was managing. The queue was moving quickly, it was calm and there was an excited energy spreading down the line. I reached the entrance and looked up to make sure I was in the right queue to be checked in by the woman I had seen. They were all women! Every member of the security team was female. I was in the right queue, I was at the right event, I belonged here. Knowing that the event organisers understood, that the security team understood and that I was understood was the most powerful moment of the entire event. Labrys Security is paving the way for a new standard in women-focused protection. Encourage your organisation to explore this unique and empowering approach to event security.
