News Blogs & News Thriving, Not Just Surviving: Leadership Lessons for High-Pressure Workplaces In high-stakes workplaces, Black women leaders face unique challenges, balancing performance with authenticity while navigating complex team dynamics. At the latest Network for Black Women Leaders Elevate Session, career and leadership coach Nicole Ayesu Nelson, founder of Ayesu Consulting, shared invaluable strategies to help Black women thrive in demanding professional spaces. Leading with Purpose in High-Stress Roles Nicole opened the session by acknowledging the pressure many Black women face in leadership—whether it’s the expectation to over-perform, the need to navigate microaggressions, or the challenge of proving their worth repeatedly. She emphasised that resilience isn’t just about endurance but about recovery. Leadership, she reminded us, is not just about what we do, but how we show up and remain true to our values. Strategies for Managing Stress & Building Resilience Nicole introduced practical ways to mitigate stress while maintaining peak performance. One key takeaway was completing the stress cycle—engaging in movement, deep breathing, and creative outlets to signal to the body that it is safe. She also highlighted active rest as a leadership strategy, encouraging attendees to shift from seeing rest as a luxury to recognising it as an essential tool for resilience. Key strategies shared: Make more meaning in your work – Anchor yourself in your purpose to sustain motivation. Incorporate active rest – Engage in activities that help release stress, like exercise, creativity, or mindful movement. Take small actions – Overcoming burnout starts with small steps toward change. Prioritising Mental Health & Setting Boundaries A central theme of the session was the importance of self-confidence and boundaries. Nicole led attendees through a box breathing exercise—a simple but powerful technique to regulate stress in high-pressure moments. She also discussed how setting clear boundaries allows Black women to lead with clarity and confidence. Many participants resonated with her reminder that boundaries are not about exclusion but prioritising personal and professional well-being. Nicole’s top leadership tips included: Practising self-compassion – Extend the same kindness to yourself that you would to others. Clarifying your strengths – Identify and own what makes you an effective leader. Defining your values – Articulate a guiding principle using a verb and an adverb to find a phrase that sums up how you aspire to live, such as “leading boldly” or “growing intentionally,” to anchor decision-making. Navigating Team Dynamics & Making Tough Decisions The session closed with a discussion on navigating complex team dynamics. Nicole introduced the facts vs. feelings framework, a decision-making model to help leaders separate emotions from the reality of a situation. She also emphasised that decisiveness is not about always knowing the right answer but about knowing who you are while making the decision. Key strategies: Pause before reacting – Take a breath to reflect before responding to difficult situations. Clarify facts vs. feelings – Separate what is objective from personal perceptions. Align decisions with values – Make choices based on long-term goals rather than external pressures. Nicole gave attendees a powerful reminder: Black women don’t need to prove their worth—they already belong. The challenge is to lead intentionally, sustainably, and without compromising well-being.
