Last week, the Network for Black Women Leaders (NBWL) hosted a powerful session on Handling Workplace Discrimination, led by Carmen Morris, founder and managing director of diversity consultancy Kenroi Consulting. With over 30 years of experience in diversity and inclusion, Carmen provided invaluable tools and strategies to empower Black women navigating discriminatory environments with resilience and confidence.

Key Insights:

1. Understanding Workplace Discrimination
Carmen outlined the various forms of discrimination, from overt acts to subtle microaggressions. Using examples like unequal pay, exclusion from opportunities, and resistance to diversity efforts, she emphasised how discrimination can often manifest covertly, making it harder to address.

2. Legal Protections and the Role of Employers
Attendees learned about the protections under the Equality Act 2010, which covers nine protected characteristics, including race, sex, and disability. Carmen highlighted employers' legal responsibility to prevent discrimination by fostering inclusive workplace cultures and ensuring policies are up-to-date and accessible to all staff.

3. Practical Strategies for Employees
Carmen provided actionable steps for individuals facing discrimination:

  • Document Incidents: Record dates, times, and details of incidents, including witnesses, to build a clear case.
  • Leverage Allyship: Identify supportive colleagues who can help sense-check situations and offer guidance.
  • Follow Workplace Policies: Engage grievance procedures while adhering to organisational timelines to maintain credibility.

She also stressed the importance of understanding personal goals when raising issues, advising attendees to remain calm and focus on desired outcomes.

4. Navigating the Grievance Process
For those unsatisfied with grievance outcomes, Carmen outlined options, including appeals and engaging external support like ACAS. She underscored the importance of being mindful of timelines, especially when pursuing employment tribunals.

5. The Power of Self-Care
Carmen reminded attendees of the emotional toll discrimination can take, urging them to prioritise self-care through activities like exercise, connecting with supportive networks, and spending time with loved ones.

Interactive Discussion

The session concluded with a vibrant Q&A, where attendees discussed challenges like subtle bias, documenting incidents effectively, and addressing discriminatory funding practices towards non-profits. Carmen’s thoughtful responses gave participants the confidence to handle discrimination in various professional settings.

Key Takeaway

Workplace discrimination is a persistent challenge, but sessions like this equip Black women with the tools to navigate these issues strategically and assertively. Carmen’s advice—grounded in decades of experience—empowered attendees to take actionable steps while maintaining resilience.
