Esuantsiwa (Esua) Jane Goldsmith is a writer of English–Ghanaian heritage, a trailblazing feminist, and a political activist. Her memoir, The Space Between Black and White, illuminates her inner journey of self-discovery and offers an inspiring narrative of personal growth and resilience. Esua was the first Black woman president of the Leicester University Students’ Union and was later named Queen Mother of her village in Ghana. Her memoir is not only a story of personal triumph but also a testament to the power of activism, solidarity, and resilience.

The Space Between Black and White, published in 2020 by Jacaranda Books, sheds light on her life as a mixed-race child in a predominantly white environment during the 1950s. Born to a white, working-class mother in South London and a Ghanaian father she never knew, Esua shares the struggles of growing up with the isolation and ambiguity of being ‘an only,’ confronting racial prejudice and systemic inequality head-on.

Throughout the memoir, readers follow her journey from the UK to Scandinavia, Italy, and Tanzania, all while carving out a space for herself in the Black Power and Women’s Liberation movements. Esua also embarks on a deeply personal journey to Ghana, searching for her estranged father and seeking answers about her heritage. The Space Between Black and White is a powerful reflection on race, identity, and belonging and serves as a guide for anyone who has ever questioned their place in the world.
