The inspiration to write memoir, 'Are We Home Yet?'

'Are We Home Yet?' is the story of me and my family, where race, migration, sex, mental health, and love collide. I wrote it because I believe there are many people like me—those with a rich story to tell despite knowing little about their heritage.

Navigating some of the challenges in the creative process

I began writing 'Are We Home Yet?' during a period of burnout, family estrangement, and personal turmoil. Delving into my family's past brought both healing and pain. Navigating through memories, some of which were not entirely true, was challenging. But it was crucial for me to understand my identity and reconcile with my family's past.

The memoir touches on themes of race, migration, mental health, and family dynamics.

It was important for me to present these themes authentically, drawing from personal experiences and conversations with my family. I wanted to convey the complexities of identity, relationships, and societal pressures, while also highlighting moments of love and laughter amidst the struggles.

Memorable moments and experiences from your journey of writing 'Are We Home Yet?'

One memorable experience was when my mother shared memories of my grandparents and their upbringing in Leeds. However, some of the stories she told turned out to not be entirely true, prompting me to confront the discrepancies in our family history and reconcile with my own identity.
