Harnessing Digital Storytelling: Using Tech for Social Change In an era where technology and storytelling intersect, Black women have a remarkable opportunity to reclaim narratives, challenge biases, and drive meaningful social change. At a recent Network for Black Women Leaders Elevate Session, JournoTECH founder investigative journalist and AI specialist Elfredah Kevin-Alerechi shared how digital tools—particularly AI-powered storytelling, data analysis, and content automation—can amplify marginalised voices and bolster advocacy efforts. Elfredah’s insights illustrated how Black women can combine journalism and technology to craft compelling stories that influence public discourse and policy change. Here are the key takeaways from her session. 1. Digital Storytelling as a Tool for Advocacy “You don’t have to be a journalist to tell your story. You just need the right tools and strategy.” Elfredah explained that digital storytelling isn’t merely about creating content; it’s about leveraging technology to make stories smarter, more impactful, and widely accessible. Whether through blogs, podcasts, videos, or AI-assisted narratives, storytelling can give a voice to the voiceless and advocate for social change. Action Tips: Identify the core message of your story. Choose the appropriate digital medium—video, audio, text, or social media. Align your storytelling with a call to action that drives impact. 2. AI is a Game Changer—Use It Wisely AI can revolutionise storytelling, automate content creation, enhance research, and personalise narratives. However, ethical considerations—such as bias mitigation, transparency, and inclusivity—must be prioritised. Key AI tools recommended: ChatGPT & Gemini – Content editing and generation. Google NotebookLM – A research assistant that engages in two-way conversations. Spotify/Anchor – Podcast hosting and distribution. Copy.ai – AI-driven social media and content creation. IBM Watson Tone Analyzer – Identifies tone and sentiment in text-based content. DeepArt – Transforms photos or videos into AI-generated artistic visuals. Action Tips: Always verify AI-generated content before publishing. Use AI for accessibility, such as adding subtitles, translations, or audio descriptions. Ensure inclusivity by mitigating bias in AI-generated work. 3. Creating Impact Through Digital Community Building A powerful storytelling strategy isn't just about publishing content—it’s about building an engaged community. Elfredah stressed the importance of creating spaces where discussions continue beyond the initial story. Community-Building Platforms: WhatsApp Channels – Immediate interaction with your audience. Facebook/LinkedIn Private Groups – Platforms for storytelling-driven discussions. Slack Channels – Networking and knowledge sharing among professionals. TikTok & Instagram Reels – Short-form video storytelling for a wider reach. Action Tips: Choose one or two platforms that align with your audience. Engage in meaningful conversations, not just broadcasting content. Use metrics and feedback to measure impact. 4. Ethical Storytelling: Balancing Virality and Responsibility With increasing pressure for virality, it’s easy to fall into the trap of sensationalism or trauma-driven storytelling. Elfredah urged storytellers to focus on responsible storytelling that highlights solutions, empowerment, and systemic change. Key Ethical Considerations: Transparency – State sources, authorship, and AI usage. Bias Mitigation – Avoid reinforcing stereotypes in AI-generated or data-driven stories. Accountability – Own the narratives you create. Inclusivity – Amplify marginalised voices and ensure diverse representation. Action Tips: Shift focus from trauma to empowerment-based narratives. Ask yourself: 'Does this story contribute to meaningful change?' Prioritise consent and accuracy in all storytelling efforts. Reclaiming Our Narratives Black women are natural storytellers, and with today’s technology, there is more power than ever to shape narratives, challenge injustices, and spark change. Whether through blogging, AI-driven investigative journalism, social media advocacy, or podcasting, digital storytelling can amplify voices and create real-world impact. Join NBWL’s next event.
