Policy Forum 2010-11: Surgeries

Understanding the Equality Act and Localism Bill

Who is it for?
WRC members who wish to learn more about the Equality Act and the Decentralisation and Localism Bill and how this legislation will impact on women’s organisations. 

What’s it about?
The event will focus on the following items of legislation and their impact on women’s organisations:

  • The Equality Act 2010: A new act which streamlines existing anti-discrimination laws and outlines public authority duties to promote gender equality.  
  • The Localism Bill: A wide ranging piece of legislation designed to give more freedom to local authorities and grant communities more ways to be involved in local decision making. The bill provides the blueprint for the Government’s plans to create a ‘Big Society’ and devolve greater power to local communities.

What will I take away?
  • Knowledge of the Equality Act and changes to the Public Sector Duties.
  • Enhanced awareness of the future challenges and opportunities for the women’s sector posed by the Equality Act.
  • Knowledge of the Localism Bill and the challenges and opportunities it presents for the women’s sector.

What does the change of government mean to you?

Time: 10am-12.30pm
Venue: Women’s Resource Centre, 33-41 Dallington Street, EC1V 0BB

The WRC is providing training to inform its members about how the recent change of government will impact on women’s organisations. The session will inform members about the Coalition government’s policies relating to the women’s sector and educate them about existing government programmes that will now end.

The training will offer practical advice on how organisations can influence locally and ways to best operate in the new political landscape.
