Project London

The clinic that helps women who slip through the NHS net

The Project London clinic is run by Médecins du Monde UK in support of its work to help vulnerable people worldwide. The manager, Fizza Qureshi, says they can help women get the support they need whether it is helping to get ante natal care or terminating a pregnancy. “As far as pregnant women are concerned they are entitled to access antenatal care because it falls under the exception for treatment which is “immediately necessary. The clinic has seen many women who have never received any ante natal care prior to visiting us; this is a concern since this care is the key to a healthy delivery.”

Project London does not replace the NHS but helps people who need to see a doctor as well as those who have difficulty registering. Fizza explains: “People don’t always have the documents or a proof of address to show to GPs. We can assist with registrations and offer the support the patient might be lacking.”

Once a month Project London operates a mobile clinic at Kalayaan (the organisation which supports domestic workers). The service is largely used by females and enables them to see a nurse as well as giving them advice on accessing health services.

The Project London team run ‘Accessing Healthcare’ workshops for those interested in learning how to get patients registered. The next workshop takes place in September.
