New network calls for donations
The
Abortion Support Network (ASN) is a new organisation that opened on 1st October. ASN is a group of London-based volunteers who provide housing for women travelling from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland who need a place to stay the night before, during, or after an abortion. This will make access to safe, legal abortions a cheaper and more humane process for the women who are denied these services in their own country.
However, what these women really need – other than safe and legal abortion where they live – is financial assistance. The network is actively fundraising and hopes to make grants available to women by December 2009. Funding will help these women to offset the cost of their transport and procedures, which can range from £400 - £1500 or more.
What can you do?
- If you are a Clinic – get in touch to discuss how you can work with the Abortion Support Network to help women travelling from Ireland and how the network can coordinate with your own assistance programmes.
- If you are a referring agency – let ASN know if you’d like them to link to your own organisation.
- If you have a website or blog – link to the Abortion Support Network's website.
- If you are a supporter – Please make a donation or set up a standing order, ask to be added to their mailing list, or join the Facebook group.
- Volunteer - The network is currently seeking hosts, as well as
volunteers able to help with accounting, admin, fundraising, legal
advice, and PR/marketing/social media.
